Benefits of Annual Urinalysis
SCREENING: WHAT CAN URINE TELL US?
When it comes to some kinds of illness, annual urinalysis for pets is key in keeping them comfortable and healthy. The following are fundamental benefits of screening your dog or cat’s urine as part of an annual routine.Â
URINARY ILLNESS & DISEASE: WHAT MAY BE DEVELOPING, UNSEEN?
It is not uncommon for an animal family member to show no signs of illness until conditions have become advanced. Unbeknownst to even the most attentive caretaker, their dog or cat may be in the beginning phases of the following illnesses. Like most health concerns, these are best treated early.
Kidney Disease. This disease impairs the kidneys’ ability to filter waste products from the blood, leading to a buildup of toxins in the body. Without proper management, feline kidney disease can lead to severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and ultimately, can be fatal.Â
Crystals and Stones. Urinary stones in cats and dogs, also known as uroliths, are a common health issue that can cause significant discomfort and health problems. Uroliths are known to cause difficulty urinating, frequent urination, bloody urine, and, in severe cases, complete urinary blockage, which is a medical emergency. When crystals in the urinary tract are left to develop into stones, surgical removal may be the only treatment option.Â
Urinary Tract Infections. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in dogs and cats are relatively common and can cause pain and health issues if untreated. These infections are typically caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract, leading to inflammation and irritation. While our animal family members may show signs of a UTI, it is also possible that symptoms are absent. In these cases, your cat or dog may be suffering in discomfort, and the infection will progress.Â
Some Forms of Cancer. While urinalysis is not a definitive test for cancer, abnormalities found in urine, such as blood, abnormal cells, or increased levels of certain proteins, can be indicative of underlying malignancies.
