Our Team

Dr. Sara L Federschmidt, DVM

Dr. Sara grew up in a small farming town in central California. She attended the University of San Diego and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science with honors. After graduation, she served as a P-3C Naval Flight Officer in the U.S. Navy. She left active duty to pursue her passion for medicine and graduated with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida, also with high honors. Concurrent with her DVM degree, she earned a certificate in Veterinary Business Management.

When not at the clinic, Dr. Sara enjoys surfing and short walks along Kailua Beach. Her family includes her husband, Franz, daughters Dixie, Betty, and Lucy, and animal family members, Archie (cat) and Dorothy (dog).

Franz Federschmidt, CEO

CEO Franz, originally from Florida, came to love the Kailua community while stationed here over a decade ago as a P-C3 Naval Flight Officer. While here, he and Dr. Sara became acquainted, and later married in Waimanalo.

At Pilina Vet, Franz has many roles. For the clinic, he maintains the budget and finances, assists with IT issues, leads marketing efforts, and is the overall visionary of Pilina Vet. Franz has a special interest in artificial intelligence and is always on the lookout for ways to implement it into the practice.

Outside of Pilina Vet, you can find Franz enjoying a coffee at Kalapawai market or relaxing with his family at one of the Windward beaches! Together with his wife (Dr. Sara), Franz is raising three young daughters and two feline family members, Archie and Dorothy, at home.

Dana Bogan, VP of Operations

From Spokane, Washington, Practice Director Dana relocated to the island in 2022 with her husband, Matt. The same year, Dana joined the Pilina Vet team as an Experience Maximizer, eventually taking on the role of Practice Director.

Outside of Pilina Vet, Dana enjoys playing tourist, visiting other parts of the island to hike, beach bum, and dine out! At home, Dana has her greyhound, Fergus, who has traded his race dog career for a slower paced life as a house pet.

Joleen Pregil, Vet Nurse, RVT

Born and raised on island, Veterinary Nurse Joleen joined the Pilina Vet team first as an intern in spring of 2022 from Windward Community College, eventually graduating top of her class as a registered veterinary technician (RVT). Joleen later agreed to formally join the Pilina Vet Team for good! Joleen is also Fear Free certified and is trained to interact with dogs and cats in a way that makes them most comfortable.

When she is not at Pilina Vet, Joleen enjoys spending time with and cuddling her two darling french bulldogs Ziggy, and Winnie.

Kailee Lyons, Vet Assistant

From Kailua, Kailee graduated from Le Jardin Academy where she graduated with both a high school and IB Diploma. She later went on to achieve a Bachelors of Science in Animal Science from UC Davis in California. In California, Kailee spent time volunteering at a pop-up clinic for houseless families, where she gained experience with basic veterinary technical skills. After graduation and heading home to Kailua, Kailee joined the Team at Pilina Vet in Spring of 2024. On days she is not at the clinic, Kailee likes to play volleyball and search the water for shells and fish with her family. At home Kailee has 3 dogs, Gizmo (shih tzu), Mālie (pitbull terrier), and Astro (golden retriever), and a turtle named Michaelangelo.

Megan Williams, Veterinary Assistant

Megan, originally from Colorado, moved to Hawaii to attend college. In school, Megan’s love for animals led her to become interested in science and medicine. She finds the veterinary field to be the perfect blend of these interests, and serving the families of her community to be rewarding work. In her free time, Megan enjoys scuba diving, relaxing on the beach with friends, and diving into a good book.

Kasha, Veterinary Assistant

Originally from Colorado, Kasha followed her sister to Oahu in March 2024. A lifelong animal lover, Kasha always knew she wanted a career centered on helping animals. Her passion led her to the field of veterinary medicine. Kasha particularly enjoys working with cats – feline appointments her favorite! She has four cats of her own, at home.

In her spare time, Kasha enjoys hiking the lush green forests on island, and of course, relaxing on the beach!
