Euthanasia – How to know when it’s time to say goodbye to a beloved Pet?
Deciding when to euthanize a beloved animal family member is one of the hardest choices a family can face. There is no definitive right or wrong answer when it comes to making this tough choice. Every situation is unique and deeply personal. The following considerations can help to assess your animal family member’s quality of life, and guide this emotional decision.
It can be difficult to determine if your dog or cat is comfortable, and still continuing to enjoy life. Recent changes in appetite, mobility, and the ability to carry out basic functions are key clues to the quality of life they are experiencing. You may notice that your animal family member’s appetite has suddenly diminished significantly, and they are reluctant to rise for food or water. They may not be capable of making it to their usual spot to eliminate waste. Similarly, if they are unwilling to stand, move, or engage in activities they once loved, this is generally considered a sign of suffering. In some cases, the discovery of a condition causing pain in which we have no options for treatment may also signal that the compassionate choice is euthanasia.
In conjunction with your animal family member’s declining state, considering the level of care you or your family may be able to provide is also an influencing factor. Some conditions may require care that is not possible to provide, in a particular animal or family’s case. Variables such as frequency of treatments, cost of care, difficulty handling the animal family member for day-to-day care or frequent treatments, and the family’s overall well being should be taken into account.
