Spay/Neuter – On the Fence? Read this First.

Spaying or neutering a dog or cat refers to the surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus or testicles. There are numerous benefits when you decide to spay or neuter a dog or cat, including:

  1. Reduced risk of certain cancers. Spaying a female dog or cat before her first heat reduces the risk of developing potentially cancerous mammary gland tumors. Reducing this risk is particularly important as cancer has the ability to travel through the mammary chain. Neutering a male dog or cat eliminates the risk of developing testicular cancer and reduces risk of enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) later in life, which is painful and causes ongoing urinary issues.
  2. Reduced risk of certain infections. Spaying a female dog or cat eliminates the risk of developing pyometra, which is a life-threatening uterine infection. Neutering a male dog or cat reduces the risk of prostate infection, which is painful and causes urinary issues.
  3. Reduced behavioral issues. Spaying or neutering a dog or cat can help to reduce undesirable behaviors such as aggression, territorial marking, and escaping. Animals who have been spayed or neutered tend to become more calm in demeanor, and more content to be in their home environment.
  4. Eliminates risk of unwanted litters. Spaying or neutering a pet prevents their ability to produce unplanned litters, which can contribute to pet overpopulation and result in more animals being euthanized.
